Fall Traditions

Growing up, one of my favorite October family traditions was making caramel apples. We'd buy a bag of caramel cubes and my siblings and I would race to see who could unwrap the most before they were gone.

We'd dump them in a pan and wait and wait and wait for the cream and caramels to go from this:

. . . to this.

I was the fourth child so I had to wait FOREVER for my turn, but then I'd get to drip (what was left of) that melty goodness over my apple on a stick.

The tradition is so ingrained in me, it's like it's not really Fall until we've made caramel apples.

I could go on about how important traditions are and ask you what your characters' traditions are, etc., but my mind can't focus that far when the gooey caramelly picture is staring me in the face. So instead, I'll keep it simple: What's your favorite Fall tradition?

P.S. The fabulous, wonderful, amazing Brenda Drake invited me for an interview on her blog. If you've got time, check it out! :)

Hi Janet,

Yes, it's me, Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet star, recently upgraded to superstar status! :)

Wow, caramel apples and your photos! Looks most inviting and my human remembers making them when he used to live in Vancouver, Canada.

My favourite fall tradition is to go outside and rake the leaves with my nose. Arf! Arf!

Pawsitive wishes to you, Penny :)

Just the magnificence of the time of year itself. Thanks for joining me, great to find another children's author. Apologies, my blogging at a minimum due to writing - but shall be back.

Picking our own McIntosh at a local orchard. Unfortunately, the crop was all but lost this year due to those summery March temps that we enjoyed at the time but knew would have consequences.

Oh yum! What a wonderful tradition. I might have to try this with my kids. We didn't have too many traditions growing up, and there's no fall season in Hong Kong, but this would be a great one for where I live now. :)

We went to the pumpkin patch while my parents were visiting. It was my dad's first time going to one. :)
