On Juggling

I've always been a bit of a sloppy juggler . . . rushing to catch the ball that's about the shatter against the floor (oh yeah, the balls are glass, I'm just sure of it).
  1. My writing . . . oof! Phew, got 100 words in.
  2. My family . . . oh no! We've got 2 minutes to get to soccer, let's move it people!
  3. My work . . . my deadline's tomorrow?
  4. My husband . . . you don't mind if we talk about my book on our date, do you?
  5. My blog . . . uh . . . I had an idea . . .
  6. My co-op preschool . . . It can't be my week to teach already, can it?
  7. My friends . . . Wait, what are their names again?
  8. My exercise . . . I could just skip today, right? Surely the scale was wrong. Again.
  9. My cleaning . . . Do I really need to vacuum today?
  10. My laundry . . . I still have one more clean shirt, right? Oh wait, that was yesterday. . .

Anyway, you get the idea. So many balls, so hard to keep them all in the air.

What are your secrets for not dropping the ball? And seriously here . . .

I sort of talk about this on my blog today. For me, it's itineraries, faithfully, each week. I find that having that visual of my scheduled hours really helps me accomplish things. The time it takes to think ahead and write it is well worth it in time saved later!

Oh hunny, I hear ya. I just went back to work yesterday and I feel like there just aren't enough hours in the day:) I try to throw my blog a few bones in this instance- I'm taking a break from writing after scrambling to write and revise a 75k project in about three month's time. My to-be-ordered pile is turning into a in-your-dreams pile. Wish I could just make time stand still and stay around in my pj's for twenty four hours doing what IIIIII want to do !!! lol.

I have no secrets. At least one ball drops every day, but I think I'm learning that it's okay and that maybe those balls are made out of rubber instead of glass.

I feel the same way right now. While I finished up my edits, my house turned into a mess and my family forgot who I was. It's so tough!

As others have said, some days you let some of the balls drop. That's as secret as it gets. I think the real trick is making sure it isn't the same ball being dropped over and over. It can take a little planning on your part to say, "this week I'll make sure I pick up the friends ball" or "today I'll listen attentively to my hubby".

I do have a good bloggy secret--when you do have a not-so-packed day, write a bunch of evergreen posts and save them as drafts. Publish when you're too swamped to write fresh stuff.

Blog-hopping by to return the visit and follow! I have a lot of much-younger siblings so my dad works while my mom and I tag-team taking care of the kids...we dont' really have a strategy other than that. :-)

Holy cow! This is pretty much my life at the moment too! Except I'm in college, so my list of things to do is a bit different, but you've described it pretty much perfectly.
But to help me, one of the girls in my Bible study helped me color-code my life, and it's amazing! I call it that, really it's just planning out the week with highlighters. :) Pretty awesome, and it works so far! (This is the first time in two months I've been on the blogs!)

Well you know I'm a ball juggler and lately I've done done too well in managing them:/

hi miss janet! wow you sure got a lot of juggling to do. you gotta change out those glass balls for ones that bounce so some could bounce right in to tomorrow or could just bounce away. for me i dont have all that much to juggle so i dont have a problem with it. if i did for sure id need a list of stuff i gotta do. i hope you could get everything done and have a really nice weekend.
...hugs from lenny

...wear a helmet so if(when) you drop a ball it doesn't do any lasting damage.

I feel like that most days, so you're not alone.

Make sure that if a ball has to hit the floor, it isn't one of the important ones. 2 and 4 from your list look like they should be in a class of their own - the never, ever drop list.

Unfortunately, I have no suggestions as I've been having very much the same problem lately. When you figure it out, let us know!

I wish I could give you advice, but I'm also terrible at juggling balls. Inevitably, I'll miss some of them and let them hit the floor.

Good luck with everything!

Man, if Im giving the impression that I'm catching them all then I'm clearly pretty sneaky! I think my best advice is to differentiate between which ones MUST be caught and which ones you'd like to, then give yourself permission to drop a few of the latter now and again without worrying.

OMG that sounds exactly like my life...

Use plastic balls so they are easily picked back up, no worse for wear, when dropped. ;) I think we just have to be okay with making our to do list smaller. Hard to do when women are told they can do it and have it all. I'm slowly learning my all need not be societies all.

My "secret" is similar to Lynn's--for me, the balls are made of rubber. If I drop one I can always catch it on the rebound.

I often guilt myself so badly when I drop a ball that I never reach for it again, too ashamed to let my mind even go there. The important thing is to not let that guilt overwhelm me, because usually most things are repairable if you just take a deep breath and dive back in.

Oh, how I can relate! You are definitely not the only one who feels this way.

I don't know how well I'm managing, but I do prioritize. My house isn't as clean as I'd like it, but no one is dying from germs (yet!)

Is there a secret to not dropping the ball? Guess the secret is trying to make sure the most important ones don't get dropped and the others you catch as you can in between.

Shannon said...

I understand the feeling. Sometimes you just gotta let them drop and pick up the ones you can.

This is so me . . . I love #4 and #8.

I've been dropping so many balls lately. Oh well ... grace, grace, grace.

You're a star for juggling that many (glass!) balls in the first place! I'd be proud of myself just for juggling half of those :) I'm lucky that I don't have many right now, so writing is a pretty big one that I'm concentrating on keeping up in the air. Great analogy!
